Origin of Salas Family

Salas Family Originated
SALAS surname first recorded between the 11th and 12th century in the province of Asturias, rural mountain area of northwestern Spain, just northeast of present-day Portugal. Presently, some variations but related as well appeared such as SALINAS, SALES, and SALA. The Christians in Spain were driven there by the Muslims and it took them 700-800 years to reconquer Spain in 1492 at Granada. Asturias is the birthplace of ”La Reconquista”. (CHRISTIAN D. SALAS, 13 May 2000)

The first known SALAS patriarch in the Philippines, although little has known about him was POTENCIANO, born out of wedlock circa 1800′s.

From a common oral history of the CLAN cited that POTENCIANO’s parents were a native girl having been in a romantic liaison with the Spanish soldier that time. In one of a relative’s words, a ”kasintahan”. Cultural and social modesties prevented them to pursue a lifelong happiness…

Various stories described POTENCIANO as a likeness of his father. He was able to raise his family, albeit his wife was also unknown, and blessed with four (4) sons and a daughter namely: JUAN, ISIDRO, PETRA, and MARCELO. Except for JUAN SALAS, the other siblings faded from memory.

Contemporary genealogic records existed in the provinces of Quezon, Pampanga, Laguna, and Panay Island. JUAN was born year 1869, and raised a big family in Barangay Lubcanan, Municipality of Jagna, Province of Bohol, Philippines. He was married to Rufina Balaba, and blessed with nine (9) siblings. They were: FERMIN, MARIA, FILOMENO, TIBURCIO, SOTERA, IRENE, BEA, CRISTITUTO, and GADIOSA.
The last surviving sibling of JUAN SALAS, TIBURCIO, died on the 14th day of December 2000, Barangay Bagacay, Municipality of Pilar, Province of Bohol.
